Diplomas Denied

This time every year marks the end for many of one phase of their life and the beginning of a new phase......... For those who have strived to make the most of their education and to receive their diploma for accomplishing the criteria of their schools. Graduation... a sense of accomplishment well earned. But what happens when over zealous family and friends cause you not to get your diploma. That's what happen to five students recently when cheers from their family and friends caused them not to receive their diploma. Was this fair to the students? I don't think so. I believe asking the disruptors to leave would of been more appropriate. Having the students do community service to get the diploma is not fair. Maybe they should just skip ceremonies and mail the diplomas and just keep graduation to boring speeches.

I think this is such an absurd situation. We should be thrilled and celebrate. If the school has a problem, then the school should find a way to channel the enthusiasm. I am not sure.

I am the administrator of a small school in a rural area. I will be overseeing the graduation of students this coming week. I encourage cheering. I encourage the students and the families to have fun with the event. As students come up to get their diplomas we do slideshows and tell stories.

Most graduations are long, drawn out...boring affairs. The speeches drone on. I say, let kids have something to remember.

Does everything we attend have to sound like we are at a European Soccer match? What happens with the yelling, the "whoohooing", the cat calls and the like is that it extends the length of such a boring affair. The administrators are forced to slow down and try to wait out the interruptions. Also, a parent waits to hear his or her child’s name only to have it overshadowed by the people yelling for another child who has just passed, stood up or breathed. Not to mention how many kids find it embarrassing. It’s even worse when you are sitting next to the people that are doing all the screaming and yelling – do they not notice everyone around putting their hands over their ears? People are fed up with having to put up with behavior that should be saved for football games, beer and boxing matches. My guess is the school sent out all kinds of warnings and these families chose to ignore what was asked, so the school had no choice but to send a message to their kids.
